Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has launched the 2024 Polio Eradication Campaign in Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area of the state.
This reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to eradicating the polio virus and other childhood diseases.
The campaign is part of an ongoing effort to vaccinate all eligible children in the state, especially as Kano remains one of the 18 high-risk states for polio in Nigeria.
The governor made this known during the official flag-off ceremony on Saturday, where he emphasized the importance of strengthening children’s immune systems through vaccination.
“We are committed to maintaining vigilant surveillance and ensuring routine immunization continues to protect our children,” Governor Yusuf said.
Since Nigeria was declared polio-free in August 2020, the governor noted that Kano has not let down its guard in ensuring children remain safe from the virus. He also urged parents to take advantage of the campaign by ensuring their children are vaccinated and practicing proper hygiene and sanitation.
The governor expressed his appreciation for the continuous support of development partners, religious leaders, and the Emirate Councils.
“Their contributions have been instrumental in our success, and we assure them of our continued backing for health programs aimed at improving the welfare of our people,” he added.
Deputy Governor Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, who chairs the State Task Force on Polio Eradication, praised the governor’s commitment to healthcare, describing it as “commendable.”
Gwarzo said the governor’s timely intervention is crucial to achieving the state’s healthcare goals.
Health Commissioner Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf explained that Dawakin Kudu was strategically chosen for the campaign’s launch due to its health challenges, including low immunization coverage and the presence of hard-to-reach communities. He called for focused efforts to bridge these gaps and ensure no child is left unvaccinated.
The Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammadu Sanusi II, represented by Dr. Bashir Muhammad Dankadai, highlighted the importance of public awareness in the fight against polio, urging families to embrace routine immunization.
