The Kano State Censorship Board has announced a statewide ban on the celebration of “Kauyawa Day,” a practice commonly observed by women during wedding ceremonies.
The board also unveiled six key measures to enforce the ban and align with the government’s broader objectives of preserving public morality and order.
In a statement issued by the Board’s Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Sani Sulaiman, it was revealed that the Board’s Chairman, Abba El-Mustapha, outlined the measures during a press briefing.
He stressed that the ban is part of efforts to safeguard societal values and promote peace across the state.
The six measures announced by the Board include:
1. Suspension of Event Venues: All event centers and party halls are prohibited from hosting any activity related to “Kauyawa Day” until relevant regulations are reviewed and updated.
2. Collaboration with Security Agencies: The Board will work closely with government security agencies to ensure strict enforcement of the law.
3. Partnership with Vigilante and Hisbah Corps: Local vigilante groups and the Hisbah Board will be mobilized to help enforce compliance with the directive.
4. Engagement with Community Stakeholders: The Board plans to hold dialogues with community elders and youth groups to raise awareness and build support for the policy.
5. Cooperation with Religious Leaders: Imams and Islamic scholars will be engaged to educate parents and community leaders about the rationale behind the ban.
6. Involvement of Traditional Rulers: District heads, ward leaders, and village chiefs will be involved to reinforce the enforcement of the ban at all levels.
The Board reaffirmed its commitment to sanitizing the entertainment space in Kano State, vowing to take firm action against practices that threaten public morality or disrupt societal peace.
