The Kano State Government has concluded all arrangements for the successful hosting of this year’s Inter-Secondary Schools Savannah Conference Basketball Championship for boys and girls, scheduled to commence from May 6 to 23, 2026.
The championship is expected to attract participants from ten states, including Adamawa, Borno, Taraba, Zamfara, Bauchi, Yobe, Katsina, Gombe, and the host state, Kano.
Speaking, the Head of School Sports at the State Ministry of Education, Malam Kabiru Shehu, said officials of the Nigerian School Sports Federation (NSSF), the competition’s sponsors, Nestlé Milo, and the host organisers have been working tirelessly to ensure a hitch-free championship.
He commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, the Commissioner for Education, Gwani Ali Haruna Makoda, and other stakeholders for their commitment and support. He also called on participating states to cooperate fully with organisers to ensure the success of the tournament.
Winners in both the boys’ and girls’ categories will proceed to Lagos for the final stage of the competition, scheduled to hold later in the year.
Similarly, the President of the Nigerian School Sports Federation, Mrs Olabisi Joseph, announced three other host conference states: Kwara, Oyo, and Delta.
According to her, the Central Conference will run from May 14 to 21 in Ilorin, Kwara State; the Atlantic Conference from June 2 to 9; while the Western Conference will take place from June 10 to 17 in Ibadan, Oyo State.
She expressed gratitude to the National Sports Commission, led by Malam Shehu Dikko, the sponsors, Nestlé Milo, the Nigerian Basketball Federation (NBBF), and other stakeholders for their contributions. She further called for sustained support to keep the nation’s teeming youth engaged through sports and academics.
The grand finale for both boys’ and girls’ categories will be held at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, later in the year.
