The Kano State Government has unveiled a Digital Multimedia Department under the Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs as part of efforts to strengthen government communication, promote transparency and improve public engagement through modern digital platforms.
Speaking during the unveiling and inauguration ceremony at the Audu Bako Secretariat in Kano on Monday, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, described the initiative as a major institutional reform designed to bridge communication gaps between government and citizens in an increasingly digital age.
Waiya said the establishment of the department followed extensive consultations and institutional assessments that identified the need for a dedicated structure to effectively document government programmes, publicize achievements, disseminate policies and counter misinformation through credible and timely official communication.
“The Digital Multimedia Department represents our response to the growing demand for modern, efficient and professional government communication. It will ensure that the voice of government remains visible, accessible and authoritative across all communication platforms,” he said.
According to the commissioner, the department will serve as a central hub for content creation, digital engagement, documentation of government activities, online publishing and strategic media management.
He commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for approving the creation of the department, describing the move as a reflection of the administration’s commitment to responsive governance and effective public communication under its Kano First Agenda.
The event also featured the inauguration of the Forum of Directors of Public Enlightenment and Public Relations Officers, comprising communication officers from ministries, departments and agencies across the state.
Waiya said the forum was established to enhance coordination, professional collaboration, information sharing and strategic alignment among public communication officers.
To support the activities of the newly inaugurated forum, the commissioner announced a donation of N1 million.
In separate goodwill messages, communication scholars and media stakeholders, including Professor Nura Ibrahim, Associate Professor Hassan Alhaji Ya’u, Dr. Saminu Umar Rijiyar Zaki of Bayero University Kano, Chairman of the Heads of Media Organizations Forum Ado Sa’idu Warawa, Vice Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists Mustapha Gambo, and the chairman of the forum, praised the initiative.
They said the creation of the Digital Multimedia Department would strengthen Kano State’s digital communication strategy and improve the dissemination of government information to the public.
