More than a year after the Kano State Government declared a state of emergency on education on June 8, 2024, residents of Langel Community in Tofa Local Government Area say the condition of public schools remains deplorable.
Youth in the community expressed frustration over the state of Langel Primary and Secondary Schools, accusing their elected representatives of failing to address the challenges affecting education.
One of the residents, Abubakar Salihu Aliyu, described the situation as alarming. “Our community is facing a serious problem. The condition of our schools is terrible. Only two classrooms have desks and chairs, while others do not even have mats for students to sit on. The classroom ceilings are badly damaged, and during the rainy season, it becomes impossible for students to remain in class,” he said.
Another resident, Saddam Abdurrahman, said the deteriorating condition of the school reflects the broader challenges confronting the education sector in Kano State.
“This condition clearly shows that there’s a lot of things going wrong with our educational system, government needs to do better.”
Similarly, Aliyu Ahmad Aliyu, a concerned resident, called on the state government to urgently intervene by rehabilitating the school and providing the facilities needed to create a conducive learning environment.
“We’re pleading to the government and all other relevant stakeholders to take immediate action and do the right thing.”
The residents said they had repeatedly reported the matter to the Tofa Local Government Chairman, but haven’t seen any action taken.
Efforts to obtain a reaction from the Chairman of Tofa Local Government Area, Hon. Yakubu Ibrahim Addis, were unsuccessful, as several phone calls and text messages seeking his comment went unanswered as of the time of filing this report.
