KNSG to Boost Power Supply for Water Treatment Plants, Industries
By Mustapha Salisu
The Kano State government is working to ensure adequate electricity supply to the Tiga and Chalawa water treatment plants and other industries under the Kano Hydro & Energy Department Company (KHEDCO).
This was disclosed by KHEDCO’s Managing Director, Engr. Ibrahim Umar Doguwa, during an interactive session with journalists on Monday.
Engr. Doguwa explained that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has invited the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) and the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) to commence operations of the 10-megawatt Solar Power Plant in Kumbotso Local Government Area. Plans are ongoing to increase this capacity to 200 megawatts.
The plant, established by the Federal Government with a 15% share owned by the Kano State Government and 5% share by Kumbotso LGA summing up to 25% for the State at large, aims to boost its share to 51% or secure full ownership.
“This would give Kano State full control over staff employment and maintenance, enhancing commerce, the economy, and providing employment opportunities for the youth and women” the MD noted.
Engr. Doguwa mentioned that the state government plans to collaborate with the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) to revive closed industries affected by power supply issues.
“If electricity is supplied to the Chalawa and Tiga water treatment plants, as well as other industries in Kano State, it will solve water scarcity and support small industries,” Doguwa said.
He appreciated Governor Yusuf’s administration for policies aimed at improving the living standards of Kano citizens and called on residents to support the government and provide constructive advice to policymakers.
