A coalition of friends, colleagues, and associates is set to convene in Abuja on April 29, 2026, to celebrate the life and legacy of the late Comrade Abubakar Sokoto Mohammed, a prominent figure in Nigeria’s progressive intellectual and social justice movements.
The event, according to Y.Z Ya’u on behalf of the Committee which will take place at BON Elvis Hotel in Wuse 2, is aimed at reflecting on the enduring contributions of the late scholar and activist, who passed away on December 11, 2025.
Widely described as a committed patriot and a key pillar of Nigeria’s socialist movement, Comrade Mohammed had a distinguished career spanning institutions such as Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), and Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS). Throughout his lifetime, he was known for his advocacy for academic freedom, gender equality, and Africa’s transformation.
The memorial programme will highlight his decades-long activism, including his involvement in the Movement for Progressive Nigeria (MPN), participation in the anti-apartheid struggle, and his role as a founding member of Women in Nigeria (WIN). He also played a significant role within the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
A major highlight of the event is a symposium themed “Scholars and the Social Question in Nigeria: Reflections on the Life of A.S. Mohammed,” to be chaired by Senator Dr. Yahaya Abdullahi. The session will feature contributions from notable scholars including Dr. Yusuf Bangura, Prof. Jibrin Ibrahim, Prof. Aliyah Adamu Ahmad, and Dr. Julie Sanda.
The programme will also include the launch of Comrade Mohammed’s major work titled “The Satiru Revolt of Peasants and Slaves in Sokoto, 1906.” The book launch session will be chaired by former Sokoto State Governor, Malam Yahaya Abdulkarim, with a review to be delivered by Prof. M. J. Kuna.
Organisers disclosed that proceeds from the book launch will be directed towards an Endowment Fund established to support the late scholar’s family and sustain the causes he championed.
In addition, Dr. J. Maina is expected to present a biographical tribute, offering insights into the life and contributions of the late activist, widely regarded as a crusader for the common good.
The event is scheduled to commence at 9:00 a.m. and is open to members of the public, the academic community, civil society organisations, labour groups, and the media.
According to the organisers, the gathering will serve as an opportunity to reflect on Comrade Mohammed’s enduring impact while reinforcing the values of justice, equity, and national development that defined his life.
