Mata Media Debuts as Nigeria’s First Hausa-Language Women-Focused Media Outlet

A new milestone has been recorded in Nigeria’s media landscape with the launch of Mata Media, the country’s first women-centric media organization publishing exclusively in the Hausa language.

Unveiled in Abuja, Mata Media positions itself as a platform dedicated to telling the stories of women — by women and for women. The organisation is founded and staffed entirely by professional women journalists committed to advancing gender empowerment, challenging stereotypes, and driving social change through impactful storytelling.

Speaking at the launch, Managing Director and co-founder Fauziyya Kabir Tukur described the initiative as a bold step toward addressing the gaps in mainstream media coverage of women’s issues.

“We are thrilled to launch Mata Media, a bold initiative that fills a critical gap in the Nigerian media landscape,” she said. “Our goal is to create a safe space for women to share their experiences, perspectives, and ideas, and to inspire a new generation of women leaders.”

Under the leadership of Tukur, an accomplished Hausa-language journalist, and Editor Hafsat Bahara, Mata Media will publish news reports, features, profiles, documentaries, and analytical pieces focused on women’s experiences, rights, achievements, and challenges.

The organisation also aims to mentor and groom emerging female journalists by offering opportunities for internships and hands-on newsroom experience.

For now, Mata Media operates fully online, with active platforms on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, in addition to its official website. The public is encouraged to follow the channels to access the outlet’s latest content.

The founders called on media practitioners, partners, and stakeholders to collaborate in amplifying the voices of women and supporting efforts that advance gender equality across Nigeria.
