The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has rejected some meals served to Nigerian pilgrims in Saudi Arabia over alleged violations of health and packaging regulations.
In a statement issued by the commission, NAHCON said Saudi authorities have continued to enforce strict food safety standards during the ongoing Hajj operations due to the prevailing weather conditions in the Kingdom.
The commission disclosed that some dinner meals served to pilgrims on Tuesday, May 27, 2026, failed to meet the required handling and packaging standards and were consequently rejected in collaboration with Saudi health officials.
To cushion the impact on affected pilgrims, the service provider reportedly distributed alternative light refreshments, while members of the NAHCON board visited officials at the camps to brief them on the situation.
Reacting to the development, the Chairman of NAHCON, Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf, directed the commission’s security committee to investigate the caterers involved and other contractors linked to the incident.
He also ordered a separate investigation into some tour operators accused of bringing in pilgrims beyond their approved allocations and allegedly exploiting unsuspecting pilgrims during the Hajj exercise.
NAHCON warned that any operator found guilty after investigation would face sanctions, including the withdrawal of operating licences.
The commission further revealed that arrangements had commenced for immediate refunds to pilgrims affected by the incident.
NAHCON appreciated the patience and understanding shown by the pilgrims and reassured them of its commitment to ensuring their welfare, safety, and comfort throughout the Hajj period.
