The National Orthopaedic Hospital, Jos, has recorded significant progress in specialist healthcare delivery, admitting 259 patients and successfully discharging 244 since it commenced clinical operations on October 20, 2025.
The Medical Director of the hospital, Professor Icha Inalegwu Onche, disclosed this on Wednesday while presenting his two-year stewardship report to journalists in Jos.
According to him, the hospital has performed 150 major surgical procedures, including hip and knee replacements, major reconstructive surgeries and the treatment of complex fractures. An additional 35 minor surgical procedures have also been carried out.
Professor Onche said the hospital has conducted more than 3,000 X-ray examinations and provided physiotherapy services to 442 patients within the period under review.
Despite the achievements, he described inadequate funding as the institution’s biggest challenge, revealing that the hospital did not receive any allocation from the 2024 and 2025 national budgets.
He, however, noted that the hospital generated about ₦72 million as Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) in 2025.
On manpower development, the Medical Director said the hospital conducted two recruitment exercises through the Federal Ministry of Health after obtaining the necessary approvals.
According to him, 193 staff members were recruited during the first exercise, while another 93 were recently employed to bridge manpower gaps.
“Our recruitment process was conducted transparently and based largely on merit. We remain committed to maintaining the highest professional standards in delivering orthopaedic, trauma and reconstructive healthcare services,” he said.
Professor Onche expressed appreciation to the Federal Ministry of Health, the Plateau State Government, the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), development partners and other stakeholders for their continued support.
He also appealed to well-meaning individuals, corporate organisations and development partners to support the hospital with funding, equipment and additional manpower to enable it expand its services.
