As part of its corporate social responsibility, the Nigerian Navy has renovated six blocks of classrooms and constructed toilet facilities at Central Primary School in Mayo-Belwa Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
Commissioning the projects in Mayo-Belwa, the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, said the intervention was under a special scheme established by the Navy to give back to society and contribute its quota toward transforming communities.
Represented by the Director of Veterans Affairs, Rear Admiral Raheem Taofeek, Abbas explained that the project aligns with President Ahmed Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and was executed by the Navy Secretary, Rear Admiral Abdulhamid Baba-Inna, in his hometown of Mayo-Belwa.
He charged members of the community to ensure the judicious use of the facilities, urging them to protect them for the maximum benefit of all.
He reiterated the commitment of the Nigerian Navy under his leadership to live up to its responsibility of protecting and defending the territorial integrity of Nigeria, while working in synergy with other security agencies to address the current security challenges facing the country.
In his remarks, Rear Admiral Baba-Inna said the project was aimed at improving and providing a conducive learning atmosphere for pupils and teachers.
“Ladies and gentlemen, this project aligns squarely with the Nigerian Navy’s Civil-Military Cooperation and Relations framework.
“We recognise that our effectiveness is not measured solely by operational successes at sea or on the battlefield, but also by the strength of our relationship with the people we serve.
“Projects such as this are deliberate efforts to build trust, foster goodwill and strengthen the bond between the military and civil society,” he said.
According to him, the classrooms and offices were furnished with tables and chairs, while solar-powered lights were installed to enhance safety and security in the school.
Baba-Inna urged pupils and teachers to take ownership of the project for maximum benefit.
Also speaking, Mr. Adiyal Kurdah, Member I of the Adamawa State Universal Basic Education Board (ADSUBEB), expressed gratitude to the Nigerian Navy for the intervention.
He said the project would significantly improve enrolment, retention and the quality of education in the area.
In his remarks, the Paramount Ruler of the Adamawa Traditional Council and Lamido Adamawa, Alhaji Muhammadu Barkindo Aliyu Mustapha, represented by the District Head of Mayo-Belwa, Alhaji Ardo Bamanga, described the project as a worthy legacy that would help shape the character of children to become responsible citizens in the future.
He assured the Navy of the readiness of traditional rulers to partner with them and provide the necessary support needed for the discharge of their responsibilities.
Our correspondent reports that the event featured the presentation of learning materials to pupils, tree planting, cultural displays and award presentations. Other facilities launched at the school included solar-powered lights, chairs, tables and instructional materials.
