From Mika’il Tsoho, Dutse
The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Jigawa State Chapter, led by Aisha Ilyasu Surko, has demonstrated compassion by donating medications, food, and other relief materials to female inmates at the Dutse Correctional Service Centre.
During the visit, NAWOJ chairperson, Aisha Ilyasu Surko, emphasized the importance of relieving the inmates and expressed concern about their living conditions. She particularly highlighted the issue of overcongestion in some correctional centers, urging judges to expedite trials to alleviate the problem.
The association provided essential items, including medications such as Paracetamol, Amoxicillin, and Flagyl. Additionally, provisions like Garri, Kulikuli, detergents, sanitary pads, and clothing were handed over to the Matron, Haj Amina Sai’d, to address specific needs of the female inmates.
The visit allowed the NAWOJ team to engage with the female inmates. Chairperson Surko offered prayers for them and encouraged them to consider their time in confinement as a learning experience.
She commended the state government’s care and support for the correctional facility, especially for the female occupants. Surko reiterated NAWOJ’s commitment to enhancing the well-being of these members of society and provided advice to the inmates on the importance of good conduct.
In response to the gesture, Kafilu Abdullahi Nasarawa, the In-Charge of Dutse Correctional Service Centre, commended NAWOJ for their thoughtful outreach efforts.
He acknowledged the significance of such initiatives for inmates situated away from urban centers.
