The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has installed solar-powered streetlights across schools, hospitals, markets, media houses, and vulnerable communities in all the 17 local government areas of Yobe State.
The project aims to enhance public safety and support post-insurgency recovery.
Key installations include new Mega and Model Schools in Buni Yadi, Damaturu, Geidam, Nguru, Potiskum, and Gashua, as well as the College of Health Technology Nguru, Geidam Polytechnic, and the College of Legal Studies, Nguru.
Hospitals such as Specialist Hospitals in Damaturu, Buni Yadi, Geidam, Gashua, and Potiskum, along with General Hospitals in Damagum, Nguru, and Fika, have also been equipped.
Over 100 rural and semi-urban communities including Dagona, Azam, Bularafa, and Goniri now have solar lighting.
Media institutions like NTA, Yobe Television (YTV), Yobe Broadcasting Corporation (YBC), and Sunshine Radio in Potiskum have also benefited from improved lighting for safer operations.
Mustapha Moh’d Gujba,a beneficiary of NEDC’s solar installation training and a resident of Damaturu, shared his experience of the project’s impact on local security and development.
The initiative is part of NEDC’s broader recovery efforts, which include constructing schools, roads, bridges, and providing clean water across the Northeast.
The commission acknowledged the support of the Yobe State Government under Governor Mai Mala Buni and collaboration with National Assembly members.
