The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has reiterated the need for innovation, professionalism and strategic collaboration to address Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.
Shaibu, represented by the Commandant of the Nigerian Defence Academy, Maj.-Gen. Oluyemi Olatoye, made the call on Tuesday at the opening of the Nigerian Army Combat Arms Training Week 2026 at Jaji Military Cantonment.
He said the training provides a platform to review issues affecting combat arms operations and strengthen collaboration aimed at enhancing operational effectiveness.
He stressed the need to adapt to emerging threats through innovation and the integration of modern defence technologies, urging personnel to adopt both kinetic and non-kinetic approaches guided by sound doctrine and professionalism.
Shaibu also highlighted the importance of synergy between manpower and equipment, noting that operational success depends on the effective utilisation of both.
He reaffirmed his commitment to personnel welfare, including improved accommodation, healthcare and family support, while appreciating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his continued support to the Nigerian Army.
In his remarks, Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State, represented by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr Sule Shu’aibu, described the Nigerian Army as a key partner in tackling security challenges.
He noted that despite progress recorded against insecurity, threats such as banditry and insurgency still pose challenges to socio-economic development.
He stressed the need for sustained collaboration between the military and other security agencies to effectively address emerging threats.
Earlier, the Commander, Infantry Corps, Maj.-Gen. Godwin Mutkut, said the training week would enhance operational effectiveness, inter-corps cooperation and knowledge sharing among personnel.
Mutkut said the theme of the training is timely, given current security realities, and would promote strategic thinking, research and professional development within the Nigerian Army.
