Nigerian technocrat, Dr. Ibrahim Jalo Daudu, has called on the Federal Government to throw its weight behind United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed as Nigeria’s candidate for the office of UN Secretary-General when the tenure of António Guterres ends in January 2027.
Speaking on the forthcoming leadership transition at the United Nations, Dr. Jalo said Amina Mohammed possesses the experience, competence and global recognition required to lead the world body.
He noted that Amina Mohammed has served as the UN Deputy Secretary-General since 2017, having previously held strategic positions in both the Nigerian government and the United Nations, where she contributed significantly to global development initiatives.
According to him, Nigeria’s formal endorsement of her candidature would strengthen the country’s diplomatic profile while giving Africa a credible opportunity to produce the next Secretary-General of the United Nations.
He urged the Federal Government to begin diplomatic engagements with African nations and other UN member states to build the international support needed for her successful bid.
Dr. Jalo said Amina Mohammed’s leadership in advancing sustainable development, climate action, humanitarian affairs and global governance has earned her widespread respect across the international community.
He also appealed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other relevant stakeholders to unite behind her aspiration, stressing that a coordinated diplomatic campaign would improve Nigeria’s chances of securing the position.
He added that Amina Mohammed’s emergence as UN Secretary-General would be a historic achievement for Nigeria and a proud milestone for the African continent.
