The President of the Nigerian School Sports Federation (NSSF), Olabisi Joseph, has charged participants in this year’s Inter-Secondary Schools Basketball Championship, tagged the Savannah Conference in Kano, to exhibit sportsmanship to ensure the success of the tournament.
The President, who spoke through the Federation’s Secretary General, Oba Funsho Usman, gave the charge during a pre-match and technical meeting held at the indoor sports hall of Sani Abacha Sports Complex, Kofar Mata, Kano.
She explained that the competition, sponsored by Nestlé Milo for almost three decades, has produced many basketball stars currently playing for various clubs in Europe and other parts of the world.
The President further stated that the meeting and screening exercise for both boys and girls were aimed at ensuring the eligibility of players participating in the championship.
While expressing gratitude to state governments for their support towards the growth of basketball across the country, she assured that the NSSF would continue to promote and develop sporting activities, alongside guiding students academically.
In the opening matches, Ahmadiyya Colleges Kano defeated Government Girls Secondary School Garki 31–04 points, while Government Girls Secondary School Yola lost 09–15 points to Government Girls College Bauchi in the girls’ category.
More matches in both the boys’ and girls’ categories will continue on Friday at the same venue.
