The Nigerian Tennis Federation NTF has described the recent concluded the maiden edition of Dr. Agbu Kefas Northeast zonal Under-12, 14 and 17 junior categories tennis championship as sign of reviving the game at grassroot levels.
The Vice President of the Federation, Malam Yusuf Datti stated this at the closing ceremony of the championships held at Jalingo, Taraba state.
He applauded the effort of Governor Kefas for his passion, foresight and commitment to lay a solid foundation towards development of Various sporting activities particularly tennis game across the state.
”What has been achieved here is consistent with the core philosophy of the current board of the Nigerian Tennis Federation, led by Rt.Hon. Victor Ochei, which is to establish a strong, sustainable, and data driven foundation for the growth and development of tennis in Nigeria .
”Indeed, no nation attains sporting excellence by happenstance. Excellence is deliberately cultivated through structure, continuity, talent discovery and unwavering institutional commitment.
”This championship is a bold step in that direction. By nurturing young players in the categories of Under-12, U-14 and U-17, Taraba state and the Nigeria Tennis Federation are not only hosting a tournament; they are building a pipeline of future champions, who will carry the banner of our nation with pride and distinction. I therefore wish to use this occasion to call on all relevant stakeholders, government institutions, sports administrators, corporate bodies, philanthropic organisations, coaches, parents, and the wider tennis community to aligh themselves with the ongoing reform and development agenda of the Nigeria Tennis Federation,” he explained.
Malam Datti pointed out that recently Nigeria recorded encouraging progress on the international stage, following determined efforts and renewed commitment, Nigeria secured promotion in the Davis Cup Group 11 after a hard-fought 3-1victory over Uzbekistan in the play-offs held on 7-8 in February this year.
The Vice President added that the women’s national team achieved a historic milestone by defeating host nation Botswana 2-1 to earn their first-ever promotion to the Billie Jean King Cup Europe/Africa Group 11.
”These accomplishments are not only worthy of celebration; they remind us that when vision is matched with discipline, preparation and support, progress becomes inevitable.”
While congratulating the winners for their victory, he called on other participants to redouble efforts in future championships.
He then commended Governor Kefas for sponsoring the championships, expressing gratitude to the coaches, referees, tournament officials, and organisers for a job well-done.
In his short remarks, Governor Dr. Agbu Kefas pledged to continue to provide a conducive atmosphere for the athletes and coaches aimed at moving sporting events forward in the state.
Highlights of the events include presentations of certificates, trophies, sourveniors to the deserving players, officials and coaches at the occasion.
