From Umar Dankano, Yola
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has urged the League of Northern Democrats (LND) to broaden its scope from a regional to a national body.
Obasanjo made the remarks while hosting a delegation from the LND, led by former Kano State Governor, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, in Abeokuta.
He commended the group for addressing challenges affecting not only the northern region but the entire nation, expressing optimism about their future contributions.
Obasanjo praised the leadership of the LND for their dedication and commitment, especially in the current difficult economic climate.
He also acknowledged Dr. Umar Ardo for founding the group, offering his support should they transition into a national organization. “If you become a League of Nigerian Democrats, come back to me and I will be your patron,” Obasanjo said.
Senator Shekarau explained that the group’s visit was to gain from Obasanjo’s experience in governance and leadership. The LND’s Secretary, Hon. Emmanuel Jime, thanked Obasanjo, describing him as a highly nationalistic and detribalized Nigerian.
In a related development, former Chief of Army Staff and Minister of Defense, General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma, expressed concern over the declining quality of political leadership in Nigeria. He warned that urgent steps must be taken to reverse this trend, particularly in the North, where he noted the situation was deteriorating.
Danjuma offered his support to the LND, acknowledging the challenges they face in dealing with a corrupt political class. Senator Shekarau had earlier briefed Danjuma on the LND’s mission to foster unity in the North and facilitate credible leadership. Danjuma, despite his age, pledged to assist the LND where possible, praising the group’s commitment and determination.
During the visit, Muktari Balewa, son of the late Prime Minister Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, emotionally recounted the events of January 1966, recalling his father’s legacy as a great leader.
Since its formation in July, the LND has been engaged in extensive consultations with eminent leaders like former Vice President Namadi Sambo, General Martin Luther Agwai, and General AbdulRahman Dambazau, to shape its vision for credible leadership in Nigeria.
