In the aftermath of the Yobe East Senatorial District Bye Election held on February 3, 2024, a coalition of INEC accredited domestic election Observer Groups has commended the transparent and peaceful conduct of the electoral process.
Led by Comrade Victor Kalu, the team issued a press statement acknowledging that the election took place as scheduled across the Seven Local Government Areas, Registration Areas, and 1992 Polling Units constituting the Senatorial District.
One of the notable aspects highlighted in the statement was the commendable improvement in security arrangements, dispelling pre-election rumors of insecurity.
The election has been hailed as one of the most peaceful and safest in recent times in the state, with security agents demonstrating professionalism and dedication to their national duty.
The statement also praised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for significant improvements, citing credible, free, fair, and transparent conduct.
The distribution of election materials and personnel was notably smooth, contributing to the timely commencement of voting across all polling units.
The use of the Biometric Voter Authentication System (BVAS) was strictly observed, aligning with the Electoral Act and election guidelines. Despite security challenges, the voter turnout was impressive, reflecting the electorate’s determination to exercise their right to vote.
Five political parties actively participated in the election: ADC, APC, APGA, NNPP, and PDP. The Observer Groups commended the people of Yobe East Senatorial District for their courage and peaceful participation, urging all political actors to embrace the democratic spirit.
The statement concluded by emphasizing the transparent and credible nature of the entire electoral exercise, urging the winner to extend magnanimity and urging those who lost to pursue democratic channels for grievance without resorting to violence.
The Observer Groups expressed optimism that the Yobe East Senatorial District Bye Election would serve as a benchmark for future democratic elections, calling for the sustainability of the observed improvements.
