The Kano State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to providing accessible and affordable healthcare as the AKY Eye Medical Outreach Kano First commenced today at the Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital, Kano.
Samira Suleiman, Public Relations Officer of the Board disclosed in a statement issued to newsmen in Kano on Saturday, disclosed that with over 1,000 patients benefiting from free eye screening, medical consultation, medications, treatment, and prescription eyeglasses, while more than 100 patients successfully underwent sight-restoring cataract surgeries.
The outreach was officially declared open by the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, on behalf of the Executive Governor of Kano State, His Excellency, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Commissioner commended the Executive Secretary of the Kano State Hospitals Management Board, Dr. Mansur Mudi Nagoda, for initiating what he described as a life saving intervention that is bringing hope and renewed vision to hundreds of residents.
Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf stated that the overwhelming success of the programme reflects the Kano State Government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery and improving the quality of life of its people.
He disclosed that, given the positive impact of the outreach, the Government intends to expand the initiative to other Local Government Areas across the state so that more citizens can benefit from specialized eye care services.
The Commissioner also expressed his profound appreciation to His Excellency, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, for making the health sector the number one priority of his administration through sustained investments in infrastructure, equipment, manpower development, free medical interventions, and people centred health programmes.
He noted that the Governor’s vision continues to transform the health sector, ensuring that quality healthcare reaches every community and that no resident is denied essential medical services because of financial constraints.
Earlier, the Executive Secretary Kano State Hospitals Management Board, Dr. Mansur Mudi Nagoda, described the outreach as part of the Board’s commitment to complementing the Governor’s healthcare agenda by tackling preventable blindness and restoring hope to affected citizens.
The first day of the programme witnessed an impressive turnout as teams of ophthalmologists, optometrists, ophthalmic nurses, and other healthcare professionals worked tirelessly to provide quality eye care services in a well coordinated and patient friendly environment.
The AKY Eye Medical Outreach, Kano First continues tomorrow, with more eligible residents expected to benefit from free eye screening, medications and prescription eyeglasses.
