PHC Awards: Gov. Buni Calls for Renewed Focus on Grassroots Healthcare

Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State has called upon local government chairmen to redouble their efforts and demonstrate a stronger commitment to healthcare delivery in their respective domains.

The governor issued this charge on Wednesday while presiding over the award ceremony for the Primary Healthcare (PHC) Leadership Challenge, an initiative designed to honour the best-performing Local Government Areas (LGAs) in the state.

Represented by his Deputy, Alhaji Idi Barde Gubana, Governor Buni emphasized the critical importance of robust health services at the community level. He also extended the state’s gratitude to its development partners,whose expertise and financial support were described as crucial for Yobe’s continued progress.

Earlier, the Executive Secretary of the Yobe State Primary Health Care Board, Dr. Babagana Kundi Machina,outlined the program’s scope in his welcome address.

He stated that the LGA-level challenge, running from the fourth quarter of 2024 through the second quarter of 2025, aims to foster positive competition and significantly improve health services across the state.

Dr. Machina also highlighted the inclusive spirit of the program, affirming that every participant, from the chairmen to the LGA health teams, is valued and considered a winner in the collective effort to enhance services.

The following LGAs were celebrated for their outstanding performance:Zone A; Bursari LGA achieved a clean sweep, winning for the fourth quarter of 2024,first quarter of 2025, and second quarter of 2025.

In zone B; Potiskum LGA emerged victorious in the fourth quarter of 2024 and first quarter of 2025, while Nangere LGA clinched the title for the second quarter of 2025.

While in one C; Jakusko LGA won for the fourth quarter of 2024. Yusufari LGA took first place in the first quarter of 2025, with Jakusko LGA returning to the top in the second quarter of 2025.
