The public has been urged to verify information before sharing it, particularly on security matters, to prevent the spread of rumours, misinformation and unnecessary public anxiety.
The call was made in a statement by Hon. Saidu Hassan, Yobe State Focal Person on Drug Abuse Control, stressing that although security is a collective responsibility, security operations should be handled by authorised personnel in line with established laws and regulations.
Hon. Saidu cautioned against making allegations against the government or security agencies without credible and verifiable evidence.
He noted that while citizens have the right to criticise the government and express their opinions, such freedoms should be exercised responsibly and without resorting to insults or spreading unconfirmed reports.
He also expressed concern over comments by some Nigerians living abroad on security issues, urging them to consider the potential impact of their statements on public opinion and peace in the country.
Hon. Saidu cited discussions involving an individual identified as KY Tebo as an example of the need for evidence-based engagement on security matters.
According to Him, complaints against security personnel should be reported through appropriate channels to allow for proper investigation and accountability.
He called on social media users to promote peaceful coexistence, mutual respect and responsible communication, noting that constructive dialogue and credible information are essential to addressing security concerns.
Hon. Saidu added that maintaining peace and stability requires cooperation among citizens, respect for the law and a collective commitment to national security.
