Security of Our Communities Is a Shared Responsibility, Says Kano Deputy Governor
By Mustapha Salisu
Kano State Deputy Governor, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has emphasized that ensuring the security of communities is a collective responsibility and not an individual burden.
He made this known on Sunday during a security stakeholders’ engagement themed “Strengthening Security Models of the Northern Commercial City”. The event was organized by the Kano State Task Force on Peace Restoration and Youth Rehabilitation Committee, established by the state government.
Comrade Gwarzo noted that the security challenges facing Kano, particularly thuggery (commonly known as Daba) and drug abuse, are constantly evolving.
“It is important to adopt a proactive approach that involves exchanging ideas and making actionable commitments from all stakeholders,” he said.
He stressed that tackling insecurity requires collaboration between various actors in the state, including security agencies, traditional institutions, religious leaders, community representatives, and citizens.
While commending the efforts of the Task Force, the Deputy Governor said its establishment reflects the government’s commitment to addressing the state’s security challenges head-on.
Earlier in his remarks, the Chairman of the Task Force on Peace Restoration and Youth Rehabilitation, Yusuf Ibrahim, revealed that the committee had arrested over 500 suspected criminals involved in thuggery and drug-related offenses across various parts of the state.
He added that, due to the resurgence of such activities, the committee had successfully identified several criminal hideouts and hotspots across the eight metropolitan local government areas.
Ibrahim called on community leaders to continue supporting the committee to enhance the safety of lives and property.
Also speaking at the event, the Kano State Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Bakori, acknowledged that synergy among security agencies had produced positive outcomes through intelligence-led operations.
He appealed to the state government to establish a special court to expedite the trial and prosecution of thugs, phone snatchers, and drug dealers.
PRIME TIME NEWS reports that the Task Force Committee comprises members from the Nigeria Police, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Nigerian Correctional Service, Nigeria Immigration Service, local vigilante groups, and other relevant government agencies.
