Setback for APC in Kano as NNPP Wins State Assembly By-election formerly occupied by APC Lawmaker

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has clinched victory in the Bagwai/Shanono State Constituency by-election in Kano, tightening its grip on the State House of Assembly.

Announcing the results on Sunday, Returning Officer Hassan Adamu Shitu declared Ali Hassan Kiyawa of the NNPP the winner with 16,198 votes, defeating Ahmad Muhammad Kadamu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who scored 5,347 votes.

The by-election followed the death of former APC lawmaker Halilu Ibrahim Kundila in April 2024.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s Special Adviser on Media, Ibrahim Adam, said the APC was embarrassed by the NNPP’s victory because this is one of the strongholds the APC claims to have in Kano.

He added that, with the impressive performance of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, the people of Bagwai/Shanono have now seen the green light and decided to vote massively for the NNPP candidate.

The death of the former lawmaker, Halilu Ibrahim Kundila, made it possible for INEC to conduct the by-election.

Again, according to Adam, the APC was surprised by the defeat because even the member of the House of Representatives for Bagwai/Shanono is an APC representative. That is why APC stalwarts in Kano are angry about the impressive electoral victory by the NNPP.

It is also worth noting that Bagwai/Shanono falls under the senatorial district of the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau I. Jibrin. This outcome shows how the government of Alh. Abba Kabir Yusuf has touched the lives of the people of Kano in its two-year stewardship.
