Soldier Commits Murder, Kills Self at Wawa Cantonment

The 22 Armoured Brigade of the Nigerian Army has confirmed the death of one of its personnel, Lance Corporal Akenleye Femi, serving at 221 Battalion, Wawa Cantonment, Niger State, who allegedly killed his wife before taking his own life.

This was contained in a statement issued to newsmen Captain Stephen Nwankwo, Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 22 Armoured Brigade, Ilorin.

The tragic incident, which occurred on 11 October 2025, has thrown the Wawa Cantonment community into shock. Preliminary investigations revealed that the soldier, who was on duty within the cantonment, had sought permission from his superior to attend to personal matters shortly before he and his wife were later found dead in their apartment at Block 15, Room 24, Corporals and Below Quarters.

The remains of the deceased have been preserved as the Brigade begins an in-depth investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Nigerian Army deeply regrets the unfortunate event and extends condolences to the family, colleagues, and friends of the deceased, praying for the peaceful repose of their souls.

According to Stephen, the Commander, 22 Armoured Brigade, Ilorin. Brigadier General Ezra Barkins, assured the public that the case will be thoroughly investigated and the outcome made public. He also appealed for understanding and cooperation, adding that measures will be put in place to prevent future occurrences.
