For many years, it was common to see civil servants retire after serving Nigeria faithfully for decades and still struggle to meet their immediate needs. Many retirees often faced uncertainty while waiting for their benefits and trying to adjust to life after active service.
Today, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration has taken a bold and compassionate step by introducing the Exit Benefit Scheme for Federal Civil Servants. This means that eligible workers who have served for at least ten years will receive an additional benefit upon retirement, apart from their pension.
The decision by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs. Didi Walson-Jack, to ensure that a dedicated account is opened with the Central Bank of Nigeria for the management of the scheme is equally commendable. This will help promote transparency and ensure that funds meant for retirees are properly managed.
As someone who believes in good governance and workers’ welfare, I see this as one of the practical ways the Renewed Hope Agenda is touching the lives of ordinary Nigerians. A worker who has spent years serving the nation deserves dignity, security, and peace of mind after retirement.
This initiative gives hope to serving civil servants and reassurance to those approaching retirement. It is a welcome development and another sign that the government is taking deliberate steps to improve the welfare of Nigerian workers.
Indeed, Renewed Hope is gradually becoming a reality through policies that put people first.
