Governor Namadi Joins Mass Burial, Offers Condolences to Families of Victims

At least 107 people, mostly youths, have been confirmed dead, and 70 others hospitalized following a petroleum tanker explosion in Majia town, Taura Local Government Area, Jigawa State.
The tragic incident occurred on October 15, 2024, at around 10:30 PM, when a petrol tanker with registration number KMC 6412 F, driven by Yusuf Mohd, 32, from Hotoro Quarters in Kano State, lost control near Khadija University in Majia. The tanker, traveling from Kano to Nguru in Yobe State, overturned and spilled fuel into a drainage system leading to the outskirts of the village.
According to Jigawa State Police Command spokesperson DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, villagers attempted to scoop petrol from the drainage, which ignited a fire that engulfed the area, resulting in the massive loss of life.
First responders, including the Area Commander Ringim, Divisional Police Officer Gujungu, and their teams, quickly arrived at the scene.
The authorities confirmed the immediate evacuation of 105 bodies, while 50 injured victims were rushed to Ringim and Hadejia General Hospitals for treatment.
Efforts to extinguish the fire were successful, thanks to the combined work of police officers, firefighters, and local volunteers.
Jigawa State Commissioner of Police, CP AT Abdullahi, expressed his condolences to the people of Majia and the entire state, praying for the departed souls to rest in peace.
He also advised residents to avoid areas where fuel tankers have fallen due to the potential hazards associated with petroleum products.
Governor Malam Umar Namadi, who joined hundreds of mourners for the mass burial of the 107 victims, expressed profound sorrow on behalf of the state government.
He offered heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and assured them that the government would mobilize resources to support those affected by the tragedy.
“We share in your grief and pain,” Governor Namadi said, emphasizing that the entire state mourns alongside the families. He pledged that the government would take all necessary steps to prevent similar incidents in the future through proactive measures to safeguard lives.
The governor further prayed for the souls of the deceased and comfort for their families, asking Almighty Allah to grant the departed eternal rest and bring solace to their loved ones.
