As the world celebrates World Honey Bee Day, science writers under the African Climate Reporters have reminded the global community of the vital role honey bees play in the ecosystem and food production.
In a press release made available to journalists by the Head of Communication and Strategies, Ibrahima Yakubu, he stated that bees are among the most important pollinators, contributing significantly to agriculture, biodiversity, and environmental balance. He noted that without bees, many crops and wild plants would struggle to survive.
However, he expressed concern that the global bee population has been declining at an alarming rate over the years due to several factors.
According to him, one of the major causes is the excessive use of pesticides and harmful agricultural chemicals. These substances weaken bees, affect their navigation systems, and often lead to their death. He added that climate change is another contributing factor, as changing weather patterns disrupt flowering seasons and reduce food availability for bees.
He further explained that habitat destruction caused by urbanization, deforestation, and land degradation has reduced the natural environments where bees live and reproduce. In addition, diseases and parasites such as the Varroa mite continue to threaten bee colonies worldwide.
Yakubu also noted that pollution and poor environmental practices have worsened the situation, making it increasingly difficult for bees to thrive. He stressed that human activities that ignore ecological balance continue to put these essential pollinators at risk.
To address these challenges, he called for the adoption of environmentally friendly agricultural practices and a reduction in the use of harmful pesticides. He also urged governments and environmental organizations to establish stronger policies aimed at protecting bee habitats and promoting sustainable farming.
He further emphasized that planting more trees and bee-friendly flowers in homes, schools, and communities can help provide food and shelter for bees. Public awareness campaigns and environmental education, he said, are equally important in teaching people about the importance of bees and biodiversity.
The statement also encouraged research institutions to continue studying bee diseases and the impacts of climate change in order to develop better protection methods. Individuals, it added, can contribute by supporting local beekeepers, avoiding pollution, and protecting natural ecosystems.
“On this World Honey Bee Day, let us all join hands to protect honey bees and preserve the balance of nature. Saving the bees means securing our future, our food systems, and the health of our planet,” the statement concluded.
