Yobe Varsity (YSU) Appoints New Vice-Chancellor and Registrar

The Yobe State Government has approved the appointment of Professor Mohammed Bashir Tahir as the substantive Vice-Chancellor of Yobe State University (YSU), Damaturu.

The approval was granted by Governor Mai Mala Buni, following the recommendation of the university’s Governing Council at its meeting held on January 15, 2026.

Confirming the appointment, the Chairman of the Governing Council, Alhaji Ahmed Goniri, announced that the decision took effect immediately.

According to an official statement, “The Executive Governor of Yobe State, Hon. Mai Mala Buni, has approved the appointment of Professor Mohammed Bashir Tahir as the substantive Vice-Chancellor of Yobe State University (YSU), Damaturu, following a recommendation by the Governing Council of the University at its meeting held on January 15, 2026, in Damaturu.”

Professor Tahir, a Professor of General Surgery and Fellow of the West African College of Surgeons, previously served as the Medical Director of the Ultra-Modern Police Hospital, Damaturu. He takes over from Professor Bukar Jamri, who had been serving in an acting capacity.

In a related development, the Governing Council also approved the appointment of Mallam Isa Audu Dallari as the substantive Registrar of the University.

A statement from the Council read, “The Governing Council of Yobe State University has approved the appointment of Mallam Isa Audu Dallari as the substantive Registrar of Yobe State University, Damaturu, at its meeting held on January 15, 2026.”

The appointment followed the recommendation of the Selection Committee, in line with the Yobe State University Law, 2006 (as amended).

Dallari, who is currently the Director of Administration at Yobe State University, Damaturu, will now assume his new role as Registrar.
