Discovery of Operational Challenges Led Us to Supplement Hajj Services – NAHCON
By Muhammad Kabir, Kano
The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has addressed the controversy surrounding its decision to engage an additional Hajj service provider alongside the traditional Mashariq al Dhahabia.
In a statement issued by NAHCON’s Head of Public Affairs, Muhammad Ahmad Musa, the Commission dismissed allegations of contract breaches, describing them as deliberate attempts to tarnish the hard-earned reputation of its Chairman, Professor Saleh Usman. He stated that rather than being criticized, the Chairman should be commended for his proactive measures in safeguarding the interests of Nigerian pilgrims.
Musa clarified that NAHCON has consistently upheld contractual commitments, transparency, and accountability in its operations. He recalled that on January 17, 2025, during a pre-Hajj visit following the Hajj exhibition, NAHCON and Mashariq al Dhahabia signed an agreement for the provision of ground and Masha’ir services for Nigerian state pilgrims.
However, operational challenges were later identified, particularly issues related to Mashariq’s listing on the Saudi Visa Portal, Nusuk. As a result, NAHCON made the strategic decision to supplement Mashariq’s services with an additional provider to ensure compliance with Saudi deadlines and maintain uninterrupted service for Nigerian pilgrims.
Musa further stated that reports suggesting legal threats from Mashariq al Dhahabia appear to be an attempt to pressure NAHCON into granting an exclusive monopoly over the states’ pilgrimage quota. He reaffirmed that NAHCON firmly rejects any effort to create confusion or compromise the welfare of Nigerian pilgrims. Instead, the Commission remains committed to fostering a competitive environment that reduces costs and improves service quality.
He emphasized that NAHCON remains steadfast in its commitment to contractual integrity, transparency, and the well-being of Nigerian pilgrims. The Commission, he added, will continue to operate with accountability, undeterred by allegations or attempts to undermine its mission.
Musa reiterated that NAHCON is dedicated to excellence and the highest standards in service provision for this sacred journey.
